When thinking about the concept for the 2d-3d study, I really wanted to make the name and colour as strong as possible was . The name ADSUM comes from the Latin "to assist" and with that in mind I really started to think about who was I designing this product for? The idea came from the fact that women have a harder time buying presents for their brothers, husband, fathers etc, and maybe appealing to a women's' frustration at the fact that when driving with their male counter-parts, the question of just asking for directions seems to be a difficult thing.
The ADSUM GPS comes with the slogan "Just ask for directions" a thing that now is possible and easy to do with the ADSUM lo psi ( low pressure). Little phrases such as "Now you can navigate... and he can get lost." are not designed to bruise egos here but rather to appeal to every ones sense of humor and kind of identify with the frustration that some woman have when navigating, or getting lost, with their partners. In hindsight maybe I should have gone a bit easier on you guys.
I wanted to have the design very crisp and clear, using the headline ADSUM in a mint, metallic green in Photonica type with the body type white on black, Apple Garamond. The mint green lines carry around the box some, but I think I needed to add the logo on more sides. Well known brands of GPS had their packaging black on white so I wanted my design to stand out, to be the first thing the eye went to. The addition of a clear panel in the front enable the product to be seen when the package is picked up and read. The box design comes from a purchased packaging box brought from the post office.
The gimmick for the ADSUM is a 12 month membership with SVL Ltd (Security Vehicle Location Limited) with an extreme warning that the product could be used by males over the age of 16 and must be accompanied by a mature adult. Standard recycling info, made in Australia and contact details are listed on the bottom of the box as well as the bar code for easy scanning. On the top of the box is the phrase "Now you can get lost.." to carry the overall concept and theme of the design.
